ANTIQUE CHINESE EXPORT "CANTON" SQUARE SERVING BOWL. The design is the popular "Canton" pattern, produced from about 1820 to 1880.
Canton is a simplified version of the "Willow" pattern, decorated in underglaze blue with the traditional exotic houses, mountains, sailboats and a bridge set against a white porcelain ground. This serving bowl likely dates from the mid 1800's, based on the "rain and cloud" border, thick glaze, and small glaze imperfections. The glaze has small dark spots and pin holes on the surface typical of Chinese export porcelain from the early 19th century. The bowl has a square-shaped scalloped top border with a round body. It measures approximately 9 1/2" wide and 4 5/8" tall.
It's guaranteed to be antique Chinese export porcelain and NOT a modern reproduction. Condition of this antique Canton serving bowl is EXCELLENT with no chips, cracks, or fleabites. As I mentioned earlier, the glaze has a few skips, dark spots, and inclusions indicative of 19th-century production.
There are several spots of missing glaze on the inside center. Overall, this 160+ year-old serving bowl looks fantastic and displays beautifully. It would make a fine addition to any Canton collection.
